About the Course

The intersection of artificial intelligence and copyright law represents one of the most dynamic and challenging frontiers in contemporary legal scholarship. As generative AI technologies reshape creative industries and challenge fundamental assumptions about authorship, originality, and intellectual property rights, traditional copyright frameworks find themselves grappling with unprecedented questions that demand innovative legal solutions.

This interdisciplinary course on AI and Copyright Law addresses the urgent need to understand and navigate the complex regulatory landscape emerging at the confluence of technological innovation and intellectual property protection. The course critically examines how AI-generated outputs qualify for copyright protection and recent developments in the United States, European Union, and other major jurisdictions.

The course addresses practical challenges facing both creative industries and AI developers, from training data licensing and fair use applications to liability frameworks and transparency requirements. Through examination of real-world scenarios involving major technology companies, publishers, and artists, students will develop skills to anticipate future regulatory challenges and craft strategic legal positions for diverse stakeholders.

Course Objectives

  • To critically assess whether and how AI-generated outputs qualify for copyright protection.
  • To critically evaluate comparative governmental policies concerning the intersection of AI and copyright, their development, and challenges.
  • To examine contemporary cases, decided and pending, on the intersection of AI and copyright.
  • To analyze several practical problems arising from this intersection, both for industry as well as for regulation.
  • To foresee future challenges arising from this intersection.

Course Outcome

  • Participants will be able to assess and compare different governmental approaches to AI and copyright regulation, identifying strengths, weaknesses, and implementation challenges.
  • Participants will be able to understand comprehensive risk assessments and legal strategies for emerging AI technologies.
  • Participants will be able to anticipate future regulatory challenges.
  • Participants will be able to analyze current and pending litigation involving AI and copyright, predicting likely judicial outcomes and crafting strategic legal positions for both plaintiffs and defendants.

Eligibility

Candidates who are pursuing graduation or have graduated are eligible to register.

  • Direct admission subject to fulfilling the eligibility criteria.

Interested candidates may register for more than one course only when the dates of the sessions are not clashing.

Conduct of the Course

Live sessions will be conducted online by the academicians, professionals, and industry experts during weekends. Soft copies of the reference materials will be provided to the candidates.

If enrollments exceed 100, the University may conduct the classes in different batches on different dates.

Mode of Assessment

Online Examination will be conducted only once at the end of the course. The assessment may include MCQ, short answer questions, case study, and problem-based questions.

Award of Certificate (only soft copy through email)

  • Course Completion Certificate: Candidates securing 50% or more in the Assessment Test will be awarded the ‘Course Completion Certificate’.
  • Certificate of Participation: All other enrolled candidates will be awarded a ‘Certificate of Participation’.

Please note that certificates will be issued in soft copy format only and will be sent via email. Printed (hard) copies will not be provided.

Dr. Thomas is an Assistant Professor in the Faculty of Law at NALSAR University of Law, Hyderabad. His primary area of teaching and research is Copyright and Related Rights Law. He has hosted a MOOC on this area on Swayam Platform through NPTEL in collaboration with IIT-Madras.

He holds a B.Sc. LL.B. (Hons.) from Gujarat National Law University, LL.M. in Intellectual Property Rights from NLUJ, and a Ph.D. on Performer's Rights from NLUJ. His research includes the rights of voice actors in Bollywood and other copyright-related topics.
